Michigan Immigrant Rights Center - Paralegal for Afghan Arrivals - Kalamazoo or Ypsilanti

POSITION: The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) is seeking candidates for a full-time paralegal position based in either its Kalamazoo or Ypsilanti office. This is an 18-month contract position that will be focused on asylum and related immigration relief for recently-arrived individuals evacuated from Afghanistan. This is a chance to join a talented team doing important and challenging work at a critical time as applicants face a deadline to complete these applications.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MIRC is a legal resource center for immigrant communities. The three pillars of our work are: 1) direct legal services; 2) systemic advocacy; and 3) community education and engagement. MIRC is part of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS), a non-profit law firm providing free legal services to low income and senior persons through several statewide programs. MSAS is administered by the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP), which provides access to the justice system for those who need it the most through civil legal aid offices and statewide advocacy programs. MAP’s mission is to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. RESPONSIBILITIES: The paralegal will support a team of two to three attorneys assisting newly-arrived Afghan residents of Michigan in securing permanent legal immigration status, primarily through applications for asylum and Special Immigrant Visas. The paralegal will assist attorneys with all aspects of their work such as the preparation of forms and declarations, correspondence with clients and refugee services agencies, scheduling, interpreting/translating. The position also requires attending community meetings, legal workshops, and conducting outreach at community-based organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS: Strong communication and organizational skills are required. Candidate must be detail-oriented. Dari or Pashto language skills are preferred but not required. An associate’s degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience (e.g., working with farmworkers or immigrant workers, or litigation support experience) is preferred. Candidate must be proficient with major software and web services including Word, Excel, and G Suite. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice. No prior legal or immigration experience required, though it is preferred. BENEFITS: This is a full-time 18-month contract position. Salary starts at $37,000 depending on experience, and includes excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits.
