Lakeshore Legal Aid - Employee Relations Generalist - Warren, MI

Organization Overview:

Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law. 

Position Overview:

The Employee Relations Generalist is responsible for the human resources (HR) function of Lakeshore including but not limited to hiring and interviewing staff, onboarding, benefits, leave management, ensuring compliance with funder requirements, and enforcing Lakeshore’s policies and practices.

General Task Areas:

  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to recruiting, hiring and onboarding new staff; benefits and leave management; disciplinary matters; disputes, and investigations.
  • Participates in the maintenance and development of HR policy, practice, and procedures.
  • Administers employment benefit programs including open enrollment, additions, terminations, changes, billing, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintains HR regulatory and grant compliance including yearly ACA reporting to the IRS.
  • Creates and maintains employee records including background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Represents organization in contract negotiations, meetings, and negotiations with employee and labor organizations.
  • Reviews/analyzes employee relations issues and provides effective advice and support to management.
  • Responds to unemployment inquiries and disputes potential ineligible claims.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Human Resources or related field required.
  • 5+ years of experience in progressively responsible human resource roles.
  • 3+ years of experience in Employee/Labor Relations.
  • Commitment to serving indigent and senior populations with their civil legal needs.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred.
  • Clear and effective communication and training skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.

Salary

Starting salary for an Employee Relations Generalist ranges from $55,500 and is commensurate with qualifications and includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, retirement plan, and paid time off.
