Lakeshore Legal Aid - Community Advocacy Supervisor - Detroit

Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.

Position Overview:

Social Workers provide comprehensive services to individuals and families who are navigating legal issues in accordance with Lakeshore Legal Aid eligibility guidelines, case priorities, Legal Work Manual, administrative policies. The Systemic Advocacy office provides comprehensive legal services to eligible clients or client groups in civil cases to address systemic problems confronting the poverty community through a racial justice lens. Lakeshore employees treat clients, co-workers, and all others who interact with Lakeshore Legal Aid with dignity and respect.

General Task Areas:

  • Supervise social workers providing macro social work services to low-income and senior clients and client groups through referrals and administrative advocacy.
  • Ensure client services are in a holistic and client-centered manner.
  • Update manuals and resource materials.
  • Design work processes within assigned team structure.
  • Identify people and communities in need of help.
  • Supervise and conduct needs assessments and evaluations for domestic abuse services available to meet client goals.
  • Train and supervise a team of social workers to respond to crisis situations such as child abuse and mental health emergencies.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with court and community agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Ensure that services are provided under the appropriate funding for the client demographic.
  • Create and participate in domestic abuse and/or sexual abuse groups, task forces, or associations whose activities substantially affect Lakeshore Legal Aid’s work and the legal rights of low-income persons.
  • Collaborate with Lakeshore’s resource development department to present to and educate client communities.
  • Identify and develop strategies to address systemic problems confronting client communities.
  • Work with legal teams to create and/or deliver domestic abuse and/or sexual abuse presentations to community groups.
  • Timely complete and submit all work-related forms and reports required by a supervisor.
  • Participate in training as appropriate and required by a supervisor.
  • Lead in office-defined or program-defined impact projects related to domestic abuse and/or sexual abuse.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned by a director, CEO, or a CEO designee.

Qualifications:

  • Current Masters Social Work- Macro license in the State of Michigan.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with low- income individuals. Able to communicate effectively, be empathetic, and understand the diverse clients of the poverty community.
  • Ability to engage effectively with people under difficult circumstances.
  • Dependable transportation for travel to intake sites, hearings, meetings, and trainings.
  • Experience or aptitude in working with appropriate office technology, including telephone systems, copiers, word processing, report generation software, internet research, client database, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Salary

Starting salary for a Community Advocacy Supervisor ranges from $75,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short- term and long-term disability, retirement plan, and paid time off.
