Essential Functions (Job Duties):

JOB PURPOSE

Serves as attorney providing assistance and legal representation to clients in up to two of the Law School's clinics or programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides legal representation to clients of up to two of the Law School's clinics. Works with clinical faculty members to manage clinic case-loads.

Manages individual case-load as well as providing legal representation when students are unavailable or when student representation would be inappropriate.

Manages up to two clinical programs when the clinical faulty members are unavailable (i.e. during breaks, or over the summer for those faculty members on 9-month contracts.) This includes legal representation of clients, and supervision of student volunteers and student assistants.

Provides mentoring, advice, and training to clinic students in their case work as directed by the clinical faculty members.

Works on special projects that require specialized legal knowledge or the exercise of professional judgment (e.g. organizing community legal education workshops, know your rights presentation etc.) as assigned.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

This is a grant funded position.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

JD Degree or Equivalent. Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan or become licensed within six months of hire. Recent law school graduates will be considered.

EXPERIENCE

Job-related experience working in a law office environment as an attorney, law clerk, legal intern, student attorney, or paralegal helpful.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Demonstrated competency in the practice of law; detailed knowledge of the ethical rules applicable to attorneys; ability to learn new substantive areas of law.

Ability to develop, implement and manage clinic caseloads and administrative systems in accordance with highest standards of clinical practice and professionalism.

Detailed knowledge of the law in one or more of the legal areas covered in current Wayne Law Clinics, which may include asylum/immigration law, transactional law (including but not limited to corporate, business, tax, and exempt organizations law), disability law, medical/legal partnerships or patent law.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least one year of experience working in a legal aid office or law school clinic.
