Organization Overview:

Lakeshore Legal Aid serves low-income people, seniors, and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in a holistic manner to address clients’ legal issues and improve our communities. Lakeshore provides free direct legal representation in southeast Michigan and the thumb and client intake, advice, and brief legal services throughout Michigan via our attorney-staffed hotline. Our practice areas include housing, family, consumer, elder, education, and public benefits law.

Position Overview:

Lakeshore Legal Aid is seeking dedicated staff who will provide quality administrative support to attorneys providing legal assistance to Veteran clients at risk of homelessness. In addition to administrative support, a coordinator is expected to be active in the community through participation in outreach and community organizations. A Coordinator will treat clients, co-workers, and others with dignity and respect.

General Task Areas:

  • Take on tasks requiring initiative, innovation and responsibilities, such as: handling funds from multiple offices; creation and maintenance of an efficient workspace; basic equipment and facilities repair and maintenance; preparation of annual and monthly reports; supplies purchasing within the limits prescribed by policy; research of major equipment and service purchases; and the development and maintenance of databases, form files, and other data storage and filing systems.
  • Obtain factual information from clients and third parties and share that research verbally and in writing.
  • Provide adequate and timely referrals and assistance to program clients in consultation/supervision of an attorney.
  • Update manuals and resource materials.
  • Create and/or deliver presentations to community groups on topics related to the Coordinator’s department's work.
  • Timely complete and submit all work-related forms and reports required by a supervisor.
  • Participate in training as appropriate and required by a supervisor.
  • Coordinate the practices and policies of multiple community partners to ensure efficient internal processes.
  • Identify process deficiencies or flaws and propose or implement improvements.
  • Organize and lead internal meetings.
  • Organize and/or lead community partner meetings.
  • Act as primary contact for partner concerns.
  • Contribute to grant reports as needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the supervising attorney, a director, CEO, or a CEO designee.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or its equivalent required. Associates Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience leading the operations of a multi-staff office.
  • Ability to determine and apply priorities and solve problems as they may arise. Can recognize when to seek guidance from a supervisor if necessary.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, be empathetic and understand that our clients are a diverse representation of the community. Able to deal effectively with people under difficult circumstances.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products including Microsoft Edge (formerly IE), along with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills, including grammar, spelling and proof- reading.
  • Ability to plan and organize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to exercise discretion when processing confidential information.
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to changing office demands.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to attend mandatory meetings/trainings.
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate data to create accurate data charts and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to take on tasks requiring initiative, innovation, and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and/or mentor coworkers with lesser skill sets.

Salary

Starting hourly rate for a Coordinator is $21.82 and is commensurate with qualifications and includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, retirement plan, and paid time off.
