POSITION: Michigan Advocacy Program is seeking a creative and motivated legal technologist to lead the National Technology Assistance Project (LSNTAP). LSNTAP helps nonprofit legal aid programs improve client services through effective and innovative use of technology through providing technology training, hosting community forums, and serving as a clearinghouse for technological tools, policies, and strategies. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the expansion of this important national resource for legal aid programs. This position can be based out of the Ypsilanti office with a hybrid in-office/remote work schedule; a 100% remote option is also possible for Michigan residents. We are open to considering applicants from outside Michigan for a 100% remote position. The LSNTAP Manager will be part of our IT team, and will work closely with several other departments within MAP.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) is founded on the belief that equal justice is a right, not a privilege. MAP’s mission is to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. MAP has provided civil legal aid for those unable to afford an attorney for more than 50 years. Today, MAP’s Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) has five legal aid offices in south and central Michigan serving 13 counties. In addition to LSSCM, MAP manages six statewide programs serving immigrant communities (Michigan Immigrant Rights Center), vulnerable older adults (Michigan Elder Justice Initiative), victims of domestic violence and elder abuse (Crime Victims Legal Assistance Program), migrant and seasonal farmworkers (Farmworker Legal Services), providing training and litigation support to Michigan’s legal aid community (Michigan Poverty Law Program), and providing access to legal information to self-represented litigants (Michigan Legal Help Program). MAP has a staff of about 160 people in offices in Battle Creek, Detroit, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Monroe, and Ypsilanti. Visit miadvocacy.org for more information.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The LSNTAP Manager’s role is to lead LSNTAP with the goal of improving the technology capacity (and therefore, operational efficiency and quality of services) of legal aid programs across the country through education, training, and technical assistance. Specific responsibilities include:
- Creating and cultivating rich and diverse training and educational resources that meet the needs of many different types of legal aid programs across the country. This includes: Maintaining and updating the LSNTAP website (content and design); delivering an annual series of at least ten free, high-quality webinars per year; leading development of technology-focused toolkits based on topics of interest/need in the community; update library of technology policies and plans from the field; execute goals derived from strategic planning process and develop yearly topical themes for trainings and webinars; delivering live or on-demand, multi-media trainings in addition to webinars; supporting and promoting replication of TIG and other technology projects through LSNTAP.org and project-focused webinars; increasing support for national tech projects like Stateside Legal and LIST.
- Engaging the legal services community to identify their legal needs, and to raise their awareness of and involvement in LSNTAP’s activities and in one another’s replicable technology projects. This includes maintaining LSNTAP list serves/Google Web forums; acting as a liaison to LSC, NLADA, and others to bring attention to specific technology needs of the legal aid community; convening the LSNTAP advisory board that meets at least twice/year; and engaging in targeted outreach to make more programs aware of LSNTAP’s work and resources.
- Providing technical assistance to legal aid programs encountering technology challenges, planning new technology-related projects, comparing options between technology vendors or solutions, and grappling with other technology issues.
- Working with MAP’s hired consultant to assist with deliverables listed above, and collaborating with the consultant throughout the grant term.
QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires applicants to be either a licensed attorney with technology expertise, or a technologist with expertise in the needs of legal services programs. A minimum of three years experience is preferred. Applicants must have project management or/and organizational change experience as well as a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income and other vulnerable populations; significant drive and energy to lead LSNTAP; the ability to work collaboratively; strong communication skills; and relevant skills to foster engagement with legal aid programs of varying sizes, with different needs, all across the country. Applicants must also have significant experience working with, exposure to, and/or a commitment to learning more about technology systems and strategies frequently used by legal services organizations - case management systems; document assembly tools; legal aid or legal information websites; phone and hotline systems; file storage systems; IT security; UX design, and others.
BENEFITS: Salary starts at $63,000 depending on experience and includes excellent benefits. MAP offers a generous benefits package including life, short- and long-term disability, health, vision, dental and flexible spending accounts. If staff do not require health benefits, they have the option to take an annual $1,500 payout in addition to the base salary paid over the course of the year. MAP also has a generous leave policy allowing staff to accrue 3 weeks paid vacation the first year and 13 paid holidays, as well as an annual 2% contribution and 2% match to retirement plan subject to board approval for eligible staff. MAP is a qualifying employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
