Michigan Indian Legal Services - Part-time Grants, Projects, and Other Services Administrator

POSITION: Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) is seeking to fill a Part-time Grants, Projects, and Other Services Administrator position. The Grants, Projects, and Other Services Administrator is a leadership role responsible for increasing the program stature to external stakeholders and the communities served through both grant writing and coordination and projecting cohesive oversight of client-focused projects and community engagement. The Grants, Projects, and Other Services Administrator will work closely with the Executive Director to identify possible funding sources, develop programs to meet client needs, develop grant proposals, and implement projects.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MILS, is a statewide provider of free legal services to low-income Native Americans and tribes. MILS represents individuals, families, tribes and organizations in cases that span a range of tribal and federal Indian law cases. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Administrative Support Services; Identify emerging, continuing and change in legal needs of the client communities that can be resolved by civil legal assistance. Develop legal projects, programs, and service delivery models to respond to the identified needs of the client community. Develop, promote and implement funding proposals to support the delivery of those civil legal needs. Work with staff to ensure accountability of grant deliverables, including funding source requirements are met in a timely manner and properly reported.
  • Productivity; Develop and lead initiatives for partner/agency education requests, ensuring effective participation, compliance, and cohesive program objectives. Develop, implement, and evaluate programs, tools and/or systems to enable accountability for grant compliance, deadlines goals, and deliverables. Assist in identifying training opportunities and develop a professional growth plan for MILS that will ensure client needs are met well. Manage daily work, weekly, monthly, and quarterly assignments efficiently.
  • Professional Growth Areas; Establish and maintain professional relationships with local agencies, partners, and funding sources. Support ways to address gaps in community stakeholders’ knowledge of the services provided and impacts within the Client community. Pursue training and education opportunities to build program objectives including grant writing.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities; Participate in interviewing and hiring staff, as requested. Carefully mentor, guide, and evaluate performance of staff, including developing goals. Participate in recommending corrective actions when necessary and disciplinary actions and/or termination when appropriate for staff. Maintain a professional atmosphere—provide proper tools (including training, support, supplies and equipment) to equip the attorneys to be able to excel in their professional capacity; serve as an example of striving for excellence. Oversee the production of the program newsletter and other communication-related projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in non-profit management, project management, grant or technical writing, communications, business administration, or a related field; Progressively responsible professional experience and/ or certifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. Five years of experience in a related field with at least two years of supervising staff. Excellent in organization, project/time management, written and verbal communication, interpersonal relations, and networking skills. A high level of professionalism and integrity, as well as a commitment to promoting the mission, vision and values of Michigan Indian Legal Services. Ability to work with diverse groups of people. Ability to work all hours of the day, Monday through Sunday, depending on the needs of the agency. History of community engagement and/or volunteerism. A strong work ethic with enthusiasm to teamwork and encouraging professional growth in others. Experience working with Native Americans and low income individuals preferred.
