Legal Services of Eastern Michigan - Senior Services Staff Attorney

Legal Services of Eastern Michigan is a nonprofit civil law firm which has been providing legal assistance to marginalized community members for over 50 years. It serves 14 mid-Michigan counties from offices in Flint and Saginaw. The agency’s mission is to provide civil legal services for those who need it the most and have the least access. We envision communities where individuals have affordable access to resources to meet their justice needs and can pursue their legal rights through effective advocacy.

Position Overview

This position will be primarily responsible for managing a docket of estate planning cases including document drafting and client signings, conducting monthly client intake rotations at local senior centers, providing outreach and education related to senior services, and participating in community groups and task forces focused on senior services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality legal representation in accordance with grant guidelines and LSEM’s procedures
  • Represent clients through litigation, administrative advocacy, document preparation, and community advocacy
  • Ensure compliance with funding requirements and prepare documentation required for funder reports as requested
  • Coordinate with Supervising or Managing Attorneys to ensure holistic, high-quality legal representation is provided in the best interests of the client
  • Participate in stakeholder and partner meetings for planning and evaluation
  • Conduct legal education and information sessions as required to promote the program

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Excellent legal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills with an ability to translate analysis into non-technical terms
  • Ability to relate comfortably to individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Knowledge of communities served and demonstrated ability to forge community collaborations
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and social justice
  • Proven analytical skills and technical expertise

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor
  • Admission to Michigan Bar
  • Attorneys with little to no prior experience are welcome to apply; training and mentorship will be provided

Salary

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and dependent on union scale.
