POSITION: The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) is seeking candidates for a full-time paralegal position based in either its Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, or Ypsilanti office.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: MIRC is a legal resource center for immigrant communities. The three pillars of our work are: 1) direct legal services; 2) systemic advocacy; and 3) community education and engagement. MIRC is part of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS), a non-profit law firm providing free legal services to low income and senior persons through several statewide programs. MSAS is administered by the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP), which provides access to the justice system for those who need it the most through civil legal aid offices and statewide advocacy programs. MAP’s mission is to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. RESPONSIBILITIES: The paralegal will be responsible for providing case management and litigation support to three workers’ rights attorneys litigating in Michigan state and federal courts and filing administrative complaints. The paralegal will assist attorneys with all aspects of their work such as the development of legal documents, correspondence with parties, scheduling, interpreting/translating, and communicating directly with clients. The position also requires attending community meetings, conducting bilingual know-your-rights workshops at community-based organizations, and engaging in targeted outreach to migrant agricultural camps.
QUALIFICATIONS: Fluent communication skills in English and Spanish are required. An associate’s degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience (e.g., working with farmworkers or immigrant workers, or litigation support experience) is preferred. Candidate must be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. Candidate must be proficient with major software and web services including Word, Excel, and G Suite. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice. No prior legal or immigration experience required, though it is preferred. Applicants who have relevant lived experience or worked with, in or on behalf of farmworkers, worker centers or other community-based organizations are strongly encouraged to apply.
BENEFITS: This is a full-time position. Salary starts at $34,000 depending on experience, and includes excellent health, disability, and fringe benefits.
