Michigan Indian Legal Services (MILS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal aid organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income people who otherwise could not aƯord to hire an attorney. The mission of MILS is to improve the lives of Native American peoples, families, and communities through legal assistance and advocacy at no charge for those who are income-eligible for services. 

Job description

MILS is looking for a dedicated and aspiring marketing or public relations professional, ideally in college or university, to help build and develop our donor outreach system. To increase public awareness and reach out to more potential donors, MILS will be working to build a system to facilitate donor outreach and a library of narratives and stories from client cases that MILS has helped resolve. The position would involve: 

  • Interviewing staƯ members on cases to weave compelling and compassionate narratives to form a “Story Bank” that can be used for specific grants or newsletters
  • Developing a social media calendar that aligns legal victories with relevant cultural moments
  • Transforming reports from dry statistics into a visual “Impact Report” suitable for donors and tribal councils
  • Setting up a Donor Management System via data entry and research
  • Prospective Research of private foundations to find untapped funding sources
  • Creating reusable standards or templates for grant applications
  • Updating records of current funding sources and donors 

Qualifications

  • Communicate eƯectively both orally and written; research, develop, present, and promote program to community, potential donors, and potential partners.
  • Ability to support planning, development, and establishment of new and established programs eƯectively and eƯiciently.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and serve multiple projects.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and record progress.
  • Strong interests in volunteer service.
  • Social media and marketing experience.
  • Able to serve full-time with 37.5 hours a week.
